Onions have a strong flavor and a lot of benefits. As a member of the Allium family, onion is rich in sulfur, a substance which gives its specific smell and most of its health benefits.
Foods rich in sulfur help increase the amount of L-cysteine in the body, an essential precursor for the production of glutathione. This is extremely beneficial for liver health, immune function and cellular integrity, but may also contribute to your hair health.Show More
Thanks to sulfur, onions regenerate hair follicles and make them more resilient and less prone to breaking. Onion juice nourishes the hair follicles, but also has an antiseptic role, killing bacteria and fungal infections, removing dandruff, acne and itchy scalp.
Onion juice effects in treating alopecia
A study published in 2002 examined the effects of onion juice on alopecia, a dermatological disease characterized by hair loss, usually on the scalp.
The study involved 23 patients treated with onion juice twice daily for 2 months. The placebo group included 15 patients treated with tap water.
After four weeks, hair regenerated at 73.9% of patients treated with onion juice. After six weeks, the rate jumped to 86.9%. The treatment worked 93.7% on men compared with 71.4% on women.
Although the study was relatively small, the results were extremely promising.
